Nexceris Launches Li-ionTamer.com to help with Li-ion Battery Safety Monitoring

June 12, 2017 Posted by Steve Cummings

Nexceris has officially launched the Li-ion Tamer® website at li-iontamer.com. Li-ion Tamer® has found success in delivering li-ion battery safety monitoring services and products. Our experience with creating safety monitoring devices for battery rooms began in 2010 with the launch of our hydrogen monitoring device for lead acid battery rooms. With the energy storage landscape shifting towards lithium ion batteries, we decided to focus new development efforts on delivering li-ion battery safety monitoring services and products. Li-ion Tamer® products are based on technology developed through funding provided by the US Navy, US Department of Energy, FAA, and DNV-GL.

Taking the proper safety approaches is paramount in any industry where lithium ion batteries are involved. Li-ion batteries have superior energy density and energy availability, but are fragile in nature. Therefore, the systems which are designed around these must be able to accurately diagnose lithium ion battery health through smart sensing and must have the proper mitigation techniques for reducing the damage that will occur if a battery event is to occur.

The solutions the Li-Ion Tamer® group delivers are focused around an off-gas monitoring technology that was internally developed to improve the sensing capability of lithium ion battery safety systems. Through battery failure testing at our facility, we have been able to determine common trends in lithium ion battery failures, regardless of form factor, chemistry, or manufacturer.

One of the clearest trends we have noticed is that batteries will off-gas prior to fully developed thermal runaway, where large amounts of heat, fire and smoke are generated. The graph below shows a compilation of the data we have gathered and the off-gas time with respect to failure.

By utilizing off-gas monitoring, your battery safety systems can deliver predictive sensing that gives you several minutes to take action on a lithium ion battery failure, which can save facilities, equipment, and lives. These tests have allowed us to become experts in li-ion battery failure mechanisms so we can offer advice on the proper sensing tools to diagnose which stage of failure the lithium ion battery is experiencing and the proper mitigation techniques at each stage.

The li-iontamer.com website exhibits what services and products we can offer, how we can help in the design of your lithium ion battery systems, frequent updates on our battery failure testing, and updated industry knowledge. Please visit the website if you wish to see how we can help you address your li-ion battery safety monitoring needs to deliver the safest possible lithium ion battery system.
