As lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries continue to gain global popularity for energy storage and power supply units for equipment and electric vehicle systems, our industry is responsible for ensuring their safety through rigorous testing and protection systems.

Sandia National Laboratory recently conducted third-party testing to determine the state of stability of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Li-ion Tamer (Gen2 system) was included in the testing and demonstrated good results for its ability to improve Li-ion battery safety through off-gas detection. The U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) funded the study.

Data centers are physical facilities that organizations use to house their critical applications and data. A data center’s design is based on a network of computer and storage resources that enable the delivery of shared applications and data. The critical components of a data center design include routers, switches, firewalls, storage systems, servers, and application-delivery controllers.

Gigafactories are specialized ultra-large volume production facilities for manufacturing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells used for EVs and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The name is reflective of the capacity of the plant to build battery cells measured in gigawatts (GW) annually.

RISCAuthority and the Fire Protection Association (FPA) has published a need-to-know guide outlining the hazards and risk control recommendations for battery energy storage systems (BESS). Recommendations to minimize the risk or consequences of BESS fires include installation of battery sensor and gas detection technology.

A partnership between Xtralis and Gore Street Capital (GSC) reduced risk and resulted in a customer success story for the renewable energy investment manager. Li-ion Tamer was selected as the equipment of choice by Xtralis and GSC for Cremzow BESS, in northern Germany.

FM Global recently updated its Property Loss Prevention Datasheet 5-33 which provides guidance on the design, installation, and maintenance of lithium-ion battery systems. The datasheet covers various aspects of fire protection, electrical safety, and thermal management for these systems. Li-ion Tamer is an industry leading provider of off-gas detection systems.

The Li-ion Tamer GEN 3 system reliably detects the early signs of lithium-ion battery failures (battery electrolyte vapors – off gas detection), allowing preventative actions to be taken to avoid impending battery thermal runaway events much earlier than other protection systems. Early notification and mitigation of fire risks in lithium-ion battery storage environments will protect assets and maintain operational functions (business continuity).
